A Rollover Is a Recovery Plan, Not a Tow
Rollover Uprighting in Knoxville begins with the scene, not the truck. A tractor-trailer on its side on a ramp, a box truck on its roof in a ditch or a bus lying across a shoulder each need a different plan. Before anything is lifted we look at the load, the fuel and fluids, the ground, the traffic and what the unit is resting on. Call (865) 339-3202 and tell dispatch what you can see.
Why rollovers happen here
East Tennessee roads have grades, curves and ramps. I-75 north of Knoxville runs through a creek valley with several S-curves, then climbs the Cumberland Mountains with a steep descent off Jellico Mountain. In March 2022 a crash involving several tractor-trailers on Jellico Mountain between mile markers 157 and 159 cut I-75 to one lane after at least 5 inches of overnight snow. Speed, snow, a shifted load and a tight ramp are the usual ingredients.
Rotators and air cushions
A rotator is a heavy wrecker with a rotating boom that can lift and turn a truck from a distance. It is the main tool for uprighting a loaded trailer. Air cushions are inflated under a unit to lift it gently and are used when the ground is soft, the truck is hard to reach or a crane cannot get close. Which one we use depends on weight, access and what is spilled.
Cargo and fluids first
A loaded trailer may have to be unloaded before it can be uprighted, because lifting the full weight can tear the frame or flip it again. Cargo transfer needs a second trailer and labor. Diesel, oil and coolant need containment, and hazardous cargo brings in hazmat responders. Dispatch asks for the cargo type for this reason.
Soft ground and slopes
Knoxville gets about 51.9 inches of precipitation a year. Wet shoulders and embankments soften, and a truck on its side can sink or slide. Anchors, winch lines and a second wrecker hold the unit while it is raised. We watch the slope as much as the truck.
Working with police and TDOT
A rollover on an interstate normally involves state troopers and TDOT. They decide when lanes close and when we can work. Our job is to clear the roadway as soon as it can be done safely. A rushed upright costs more than a careful one.
Costs and time
Published rate sheets list rotators at about $790 to $1,500 an hour. Idaho lists a rotator at $1,250 and Flagler County, Florida lists $1,500 an hour with a three-hour minimum. Rollovers often mean more than one truck, labor and a long clean-up, so we explain the number before the work starts.
What a Rollover Recovery Includes
The steps and tools involved when a truck has gone over.
Rotator recovery
Boom lift and rotation to put loaded trailers back on their wheels.
Air cushion lifting
Inflatable bags lift units from soft ground or tight spots.
Cargo transfer
Freight moved to another trailer before the unit is lifted.
Fuel and fluid containment
Diesel and oil contained and passed to cleanup crews.
Bus and RV uprighting
Passenger vehicles lifted with care for the body and frame.
Ditch and embankment recovery
Units on slopes anchored and pulled to the road.

Typical Rollover Recovery Costs
| Service | Typical range |
|---|---|

| Rotator (Idaho rate sheet) | About $1,250 |
| Air bag unit (Horry County, SC) | About $932 per hour |
| Service truck (Horry County, SC) | About $250 per hour |
| Labor (Idaho and South Carolina rate sheets) | About $122 to $175 per person per hour |
| Storage | About $65 to $100 per day |
Rates vary by unit, distance, scene and time of day. Your written invoice estimate is the price. Figures come from published rate sheets in Kentucky, Idaho, South Carolina and Florida, not from Tennessee.
How a Rollover Recovery Works
1. Assess the scene
Look at the load, fluids, ground, traffic and unit position.
2. Secure the area
Traffic control, containment and anchors go in.
3. Lighten if needed
Cargo is transferred or fluids drained so the lift is safe.
4. Upright and tow
Rotator or air cushions set the unit upright, then it is towed.
5. Clear and report
The roadway is cleared and you get an itemized invoice.

Rollover Uprighting Questions
Can you upright a loaded tanker?
Tankers need special planning, including product type and pressure. Tell dispatch what is aboard.
Will my trailer be damaged by uprighting?
A careful recovery reduces damage. A truck that has already rolled may have frame or cab damage that a lift will not change.
Who decides when we start?
Police and TDOT control the scene on public roads. We start when they clear us.
Do you handle buses and RVs that rolled?
Yes. If people are still aboard, tell dispatch right away.
