Where I-75 Meets US 321 and Trucks Turn Toward the River

Heavy Duty Towing in Lenoir City covers a Loudon County city of 10,117 people (2020 census) that incorporated in 1907 and sits about 26 miles from downtown Knoxville by I-75. A small part of the city lies in Roane County. Through freight on the interstate meets local trucks on US 321, US 11 and SR 95 here. Call (865) 339-3202 and say whether you are on I-75, I-40 or the surface streets.

Exit 81 and the I-40 split

I-75 exit 81 serves US 321 (SR 73) and SR 95, with signs for Oak Ridge, Lenoir City and Maryville. Northbound, a few miles on, I-40 and I-75 come together at exit 84B and run as one road toward Knoxville. Southbound, drivers choose between I-40 west to Nashville and I-75 south. US 321 also reaches I-40 at exit 364, its northern end. Wrong turns, brake trouble on the ramps and trucks stopping to work out the split are all possible here.

Fort Loudoun Dam

Fort Loudoun Dam, a TVA project begun in 1940, stands on the Tennessee River in Loudon County. Its gates closed on August 2, 1943. It is 122 feet high and 4,190 feet long. The lock is 60 by 360 feet and lifts boats about 70 feet between Fort Loudoun Lake and Watts Bar Lake. From 1963 until July 2017 US 321 (Lamar Alexander Parkway) crossed the dam on the J. Carmichael Greer Bridge, and a newer bridge southeast of the dam opened in summer 2017. A loaded truck on a long bridge over open water needs a careful recovery plan.

River on the south side

The Tennessee River forms the city's southern boundary, with TVA's Fort Loudoun and Watts Bar land nearby. The Little Tennessee River joins the Tennessee at Lenoir City. Soft, low ground near the water can hold a trailer in place after it leaves the pavement, and we recover those with winch lines.

The canal and the county

A half-mile Tellico canal diverts water from the Little Tennessee River at Tellico Reservoir into Fort Loudoun Lake and allows barge-size craft to pass between the two reservoirs. Lenoir City is the largest city in Loudon County, which had 54,886 people in 2020. Heavy rigs moving to and from the lakes include boats on trailers, marine equipment and RVs.

Streets and old mills

US 11 runs east-west through the city. Lenoir City has a long industrial past, including a rail car factory, a knitting mill and the Lenoir Cotton Mill, and a railroad reached the Lenoir plantation in 1855. Those streets were laid out long before 53-foot trailers. Tight turns near older buildings cause hang-ups.
