Frequently Asked Questions

Heavy Duty Towing Questions

How much does heavy duty towing cost in Knoxville?

Published rate sheets give a rough guide. Louisville, Kentucky lists a heavy tow at $450 hook-up plus $9.50 per mile and recovery at $350 an hour. Horry County, South Carolina lists heavy wreckers at $576 an hour, and Flagler County, Florida lists $850 an hour. Your price depends on the unit, the distance, the scene and the time of day, and you get a written invoice estimate.

How fast can you get to me?

Dispatch answers 24/7 and gives you an honest arrival estimate on the call. It depends on where you are, traffic, weather and what else is on the road. We do not promise a number before we know your location.

What do I need to tell dispatch?

Give the interstate, direction and mile marker or exit, the type and weight of the unit, whether it is loaded and with what, what is wrong, and who is paying. If the load is hazardous, say so right away.

Can you tow a hazmat load?

Tell us before we arrive. Hazardous cargo changes the plan, who needs to be notified and where the unit can go. In Knoxville, trucks carrying hazardous cargo must use the I-640 bypass, so we plan the route accordingly.

Do you tow buses and RVs, or only semis?

Both, plus box trucks, dump trucks and heavy equipment. A bus with passengers aboard is handled differently than an empty trailer, so tell us if people are still with the vehicle.

Can I choose where my truck is towed?

Usually yes. Tell dispatch your shop, terminal or yard. When police order a tow from a crash scene the destination may be set for you, and we will explain what that means for storage and release.

Heavy Duty Towing Questions

What counts as a heavy duty tow?

Generally Class 7 and 8 trucks, loaded trailers, buses, motorhomes and heavy equipment. Dispatch will ask for the weight class to send the right wrecker.

Can you tow a loaded trailer?

Yes, but the cargo and weight matter. Tell us what is aboard. A heavy load may need a second wrecker or a trailer swap.

Do you move construction equipment?

Yes, on lowboy or landoll trailers. Give us the make, model, weight and pickup address.

Can the tow go out of state?

Long hauls are possible. Mileage is on your written estimate so you see the total before it moves.

Semi Truck Towing Questions

Can you tow a semi with the trailer still attached?

Often yes if the trailer is empty or lightly loaded and the fifth wheel is sound. A heavy load may need a second wrecker.

Do you pull driveshafts?

Yes, when the drive line is damaged or the tractor cannot be lifted by the drive axles.

What if my brakes are locked?

Tell dispatch. Many spring brakes can be released mechanically. If not, the tractor is lifted so the drives are off the ground.

Can I have my truck towed to my own shop?

Usually. Give dispatch the address. The mileage is on your invoice estimate.

Rollover Uprighting Questions

Can you upright a loaded tanker?

Tankers need special planning, including product type and pressure. Tell dispatch what is aboard.

Will my trailer be damaged by uprighting?

A careful recovery reduces damage. A truck that has already rolled may have frame or cab damage that a lift will not change.

Who decides when we start?

Police and TDOT control the scene on public roads. We start when they clear us.

Do you handle buses and RVs that rolled?

Yes. If people are still aboard, tell dispatch right away.

Winch Outs Questions

Should I keep spinning the wheels?

No. Spinning usually digs the unit in deeper. Stop, set the brakes and call.

Can you pull a loaded dump truck?

Yes. The weight may call for a second line, a snatch block or a second wrecker. Tell dispatch what is aboard.

Will a winch out damage my truck?

A slow, straight pull using frame anchors normally does not. We avoid pulling from bumpers and light parts.

What if the truck is on a steep slope?

Tell dispatch. Slopes need anchors and sometimes a second wrecker for safety.

Bus & Motorcoach Towing Questions

Can you tow a bus with passengers aboard?

No. Passengers should be off the vehicle and in a safe place before it is lifted.

Do you tow rear-engine coaches?

Yes, using an underlift or a lift method that protects the drivetrain. Tell dispatch the engine location.

Can you tow a school bus?

Yes. We follow your district's rules about the destination and paperwork.

What about luggage?

Luggage is normally removed first. If it cannot be, tell dispatch before we arrive.

Truck Roadside Service Questions

Do you carry tires?

Tell dispatch the size and whether you have a spare. Having the tire ready speeds the job.

How much is fuel delivery?

A published Kentucky rate sheet lists about $125 plus the fuel. Your invoice estimate is the price.

What if my truck won't start after a jump?

It may be the alternator, starter or fuel. We will say so and offer a tow.

Can you help at a truck stop?

Yes. Give the stop name or address and where the truck is parked.
