The Descent Into the Clinch River Valley on I-75
Heavy Duty Towing in Clinton centers on the point where I-75 drops off the ridge and runs toward the Clinch River. Clinton is the seat of Anderson County and had 10,056 people in the 2020 census. It was founded in 1801 as Burrville and was incorporated in 1890. If your truck is stopped nearby, call (865) 339-3202 and give the dispatcher your direction and the exit you last saw.
Exit 122 and the grade
I-75 exit 122 is the interchange with SR 61 near Clinton, with signs for Norris. The Wikipedia route description says that after the Clinton exit the interstate descends sharply into a valley and crosses the Clinch River a few miles later. Northbound loaded trucks should watch their brakes on the way down.
Earlier in the county, exit 117 serves SR 170 (Raccoon Valley Road), and exit 112 in Powell is where I-75 narrows from six lanes to four. Between Powell and Clinton the road has what the article calls a crooked and hazardous segment with several S-curves.
Old roads through town
US 25W and SR 9 run through Clinton. The route meets SR 61 (Charles G. Seivers Boulevard) in town, the access to I-75, and then runs through the historic downtown as Main Street. The William Everette Lewallen Memorial Bridge carries it over the Clinch River. Clinton Highway to the south links Clinton to Knoxville. Downtown streets are narrow for a loaded trailer, and a stall on Main Street blocks traffic fast.
The Clinch River is the other dividing line. Our recoveries near the river use winch lines and spotters where the bank is soft.
The roads toward Norris
Anderson County was formed on November 6, 1801, and Clinton is its seat. SR 61 leads from Clinton toward Norris and Norris Lake, which is a major tourist draw. Where US 441 (the Norris Freeway) runs near Norris Dam it is described as windy and curvy, and RVs and boat haulers add to the load. A trailer that stops on a blind curve there needs a clear plan before a wrecker pulls in.
Work that used to run through Clinton
Coal mining and textiles shaped the economy, and Magnet Knitting Mills opened in 1906. Freshwater pearl harvesting on the Clinch River ended after dams changed the river. That history explains why Clinton has wide industrial corridors in places and tight, older streets in others.
A town people remember
On August 27, 1956, twelve Black students entered Clinton High School for the first time, the first desegregation of a state-supported public school in the Southeast. The school was bombed on October 5, 1958 and rebuilt. Visitors still come to see the town, and that adds cars and buses to Main Street.
