A Rivers-and-Ridges City Where Every Interstate Funnels Trucks

Heavy Duty Towing in Knoxville means working in a city of 190,740 people (2020 census) that is also the place where I-40 and I-75 share the same pavement. Knoxville is the seat of Knox County, was founded in 1791 and incorporated in 1815. Five interstate routes, I-40, I-75, I-640, I-275 and I-140, meet in and around the city, so a disabled tractor-trailer can end up on any of them within a few miles. Call (865) 339-3202 and the dispatcher will start with your exact spot.

The interstate stack around downtown

Interstate 40 and Interstate 75 run together through west Knoxville. The Tennessee DOT figure for that shared stretch between Papermill Road and I-640 was 187,191 vehicles a day in 2025, after a nearby peak of 218,583 in 2022. Near exit 374 (Lovell Road) the road widens to eight lanes, and at the I-640 split it drops back. When a rig breaks down in that traffic, the first job is a safe scene, and that usually means traffic control before any hook goes on.

The loop that matters most to trucks is I-640. It is 10.80 miles long, three lanes each way, and sits about three miles north of downtown. Trucks hauling hazardous cargo through Knoxville must use it. That makes I-640 the road where tankers, placarded loads and through freight all stack up, with exit 1 at SR 62 (Western Avenue), exit 6 at US 441 (Broadway) and exit 8 at Washington Pike and Millertown Pike. The east end was rebuilt from July 2022 until all lanes reopened on August 26, 2024.

I-275 is short, only 2.98 miles, but it threads Sharp's Gap and ties downtown to I-75, I-640 and US 25W. Its first section opened October 28, 1960. The ramp from I-640 east to I-75 north is a single lane, which is a common place for a stalled truck to back traffic up.

Hills, water and weather

Knoxville sits at 886 feet, but it is not flat. Sharp's Ridge reaches 1,391 feet in the north and Brown Mountain 1,260 feet in the south. The Holston and French Broad rivers meet in the southeast and form the Tennessee River, which becomes Fort Loudoun Lake. Bridges and ramps near that water leave little shoulder for a heavy wrecker to set up.

The city gets about 52 inches of precipitation a year and an average of 4.6 inches of snow. The one-day snow record is 17.5 inches, set on February 13, 1960. Wet ramps and curves matter more here than deep snow, so tell the dispatcher about road conditions at your spot.

Freight that starts and ends in Knoxville

Pilot Company, the fuel and travel center business, is headquartered in Knoxville, and H. T. Hackney, a wholesale grocery distributor, is based here too. Sea Ray built boats at a southeast Knoxville complex that employed 760 people in 2009. South of the city, McGhee Tyson Airport sits about 12 miles from downtown. We deal with the box trucks, flatbeds, reefers and low-boys that serve all of it.

What to have ready when you call

  • Interstate or road, direction, and the nearest exit or mile marker
  • Tractor, trailer, box truck, bus or RV, and rough weight
  • Loaded or empty, and whether the cargo is hazardous
  • What happened: breakdown, flat tires, crash, rollover or stuck
  • Who pays: driver, fleet, broker or insurer
  • Whether the unit is blocking a lane

The dispatcher will give an honest arrival estimate on the call based on where you are and what is already running.
